*Faith Series: The Courage of Gideon* (III)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night."* (Judges 6:27 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
3. It takes a courageous faith to build up the altars of the Lord.
Gideon was not only told to break down the altars of Baal, but he was also commissioned to rebuild the altars of the Lord - see Judges 6:26. It takes faith to do that in days of apostasy. To cast worldliness, carnal methods and liberalism out of a church and to bring in an emphasis on prayer, the preaching of the gospel and the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit – this demands a courageous faith. To go to some of our schools, colleges and theological seminaries where the authority of the Bible is denied, and to do what Jude exhorts us to do, demands a courageous faith –- look up Jude 3.
4. It takes a courageous faith to ask God for a sign.
Judges 6:36-40 are exciting verses. Was this evidence of Gideon’s lack of faith? No, for it required great faith to make such a proposal to the Lord, confident that He would perform the miracle. Gideon believed in miracles!
5. It takes a courageous faith to despise not the day of small things.
The enemy was very powerful, and numerically it was far greater than Gideon’s army (Judges 6:5). Gideon had 32,000 men (Judges 7:3); but what a shock when God told him to reduce his forces (Judges 7:2-3); and then to reduce them still further! (Judges 7:4-7). What a drastic subtraction this was! Why was it necessary? Verse 2 gives the answer, and so does Zechariah 4:6 and 1 Corinthians 1:27. Lest Israel should be tempted afterwards to say, ’We gained the victory!’ God had to show manifestly that it was His victory and not theirs. He works in the same way today!
_MEDITATION:_
*"Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts."* -- Zechariah 4:6 (KJV)

*MARCHING TOWARDS MATURITY* (II)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and tell it in love--like Christ in everything. We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do."* (Ephesians 4:15 (Message))
_Bible Insight:_
In every field, only TRAINED MEN are appointed to TRAIN OTHERS. It is not different for the church! Do you understand the scriptures? Can you pray? Can you evangelize? Do you operate in the gifts of the Spirit? Do you consistently walk in the fruit of the Spirit? If not, reject that Pastoral form they've been hanging on your neck. Don't experiment with people's lives! A novice cannot produce skilled men!
If you're a Pastor or church elder or church worker or fellowship executive and you're struggling with prayer and the study of the word, GET HELP ON TIME! You cannot give what you don't have! You will be busy thinking of how to make church lively because you're also lazy in spiritual things. GET HELP ON TIME!
A Pastor, church worker, church elder or fellowship executive is a trainer. You have to stretch people beyond their comfort zones. See how Jesus trained His disciples? There's no growth without stretching people beyond the limits they've set for themselves. E.g. 'I can't pray beyond 20mins'. When you meet a Pastor who's worth his salt, he'll make you pray 1hr, 2hrs or more and you'll become better with time. I've seen people who were very lazy in prayers become addicted to it with the right training! Pampering is not one of the tools for discipleship - it has never worked!
_MEDITATION:_
*"The local church is not a hiding place for unserious believers. We welcome all with the goal of transforming all. Those who are not ready for this transformation cannot stand the heat of discipleship. They run away when nobody is chasing them."*

*Ways to Improve Your Communication* (II)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you."* (1 Colosians 3:13 (GNB))"
_Bible Insight:_
4. Forgive in the same way the Lord has forgiven us.
So often we only want to forgive if the other person has forgiven us. We hold a lack of forgiveness over others because we don’t want them to get away with anything. But, I need to be reminded of the way the Lord has forgiven me. I need to remember that He doesn’t forgive me not because I deserve it or did anything to earn it.
Rather, God’s forgiveness is unconditional. A Christ-like forgiveness goes first and doesn’t wait for the other person to seek forgiveness first. I acted like an eight-year-old one weekend as I waited for my kids to apologize to me before I apologized and sought forgiveness from them.
5. Remember how number 1-4 happen in the first place.
Last, but certainly not least, remember how you do these things. You do them as one who is chosen, holy, and dearly loved. This passage from Paul is not just a to-do list. We’re unable to do these things on our own apart from God’s grace and His Spirit (John 15:5). We wear humility, treat others with compassion, and forgive others because we’re God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved.
_MEDITATION:_
*"REMEMBER: 1. Put on humility. It looks good on everyone. 2. Try on some compassion, kindness, and gentleness. 3. Remember to be patient with everyone."*

*Making Your Marriage Less Complicated*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"You have been put to no test but such as is common to man: and God is true, who will not let any test come on you which you are not able to undergo; but he will make with the test a way out of it, so that you may be able to go through it."* (1 Corinthians 10:13 (BBR))
_Bible Insight:_
The only way to avoid the complications of relationships is to have none. We human beings need each other, so God created us with the capacity to love, to have friends, to get married, and to live in community with each other. But, as Facebook would attest, many of us would simply say of our closest relationships in life, “It’s complicated.â€
My own marriage illustrates this well. When Angie and I married back in 1997, we were 19 and assumed life together would be fairly smooth sailing. A decade in, we were discovering and doing battle with the monsters lurking within us (especially me). Things got…well, it’s complicated.
What saved us? I attribute the turnaround to at least five factors.
1.Redemption: Jesus died to redeem and heal us from sin and his Holy Spirit finds ways to actively draw our hearts back in line with his. It’s his power that heals.
2. Grace: My wife made repeated decisions to show grace and extend love to a sometimes unlovable, undeserving husband. She’s amazing!
3. Talk!: We both decided not to walk out, not to give up, and to pray desperately and repeatedly that God would change each of us according to his will.
4. Small Group: Our small group at Church taught us about opening up, getting real, and struggling in community with others.
_MEDITATION:_
*"5. Nobody’s Perfect: Our Church family taught us that nobody’s perfect, we’re all broken, and there is always hope when God’s amazing grace invades our hearts and our circumstances."*

*Communication in Marriage*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"MY DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS, TAKE NOTE OF THIS: EVERYONE SHOULD BE QUICK TO LISTEN, SLOW TO SPEAK AND SLOW TO BECOME ANGRY"* (JAMES 1:19 (NIV))
_Bible Insight:_
Angie and I talk to a lot of couples about communication in marriage, and one of the most common problems we encounter is the communication conundrum. Spouses really struggle to know how to articulate themselves as well as how to understand each other.
Nearly two thousand years ago, James, the half-brother of Jesus and apostolic leader of the early Jerusalem church, gave us the ultimate plan for better communication (including communication in marriage) and understanding in any context, and it’s made up of three simple phrases.
Take a moment to imagine how your closest relationships would change for the better if you developed these three habits:
1. Listen attentively before thinking of your response.
2. Speak only after fully thinking your words through.
3. Slow down the process of frustration.
Ultimately, what James is challenging us to do is to handle our emotions in a holy, healthy way. You don’t always control your emotions, but you always have a choice in how to respond to your emotions and what actions you choose to take based on your feelings.
_MEDITATION:_
*"You will always communicate more clearly and effectively when you tune in, take it slow, and take it down a notch."*
