*THE AWAKENING OF THE WATCHERS* (II)
_Key Bible Text:_
*“For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth!"* (Isaiah 21:6 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
Again it will help us to see the context of our key Bible text:
*"Prepare the table, WATCH IN THE WATCHTOWER, eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and anoint the shield. For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, SET A WATCHMAN, let him DECLARE WHAT HE SEETH. And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed: And HE CRIED, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower in the DAYTIME, and I am set in my ward whole NIGHTS:"* (Isaiah 21:5-8 (KJV))
The job of the watchman is not a child's play. However, no greatness is guaranteed where there are no watching by the watchmen who are dutifully staying vigilant day and night! The first job of the watchman is watching! Watching against external aggression and internal disturbance to the peace and progress of the realm.
The second job of the watchman is to declare, call out, warn, inform and alert the realm. The watchman who will succeed at His assignment must hate laziness and lack of focus. He must be bold and fearless too, being able to be on the look out for all manner of activities and also warn against such things that will pose a danger to the realm.
The reality of the born of God, the new creation man is one of watchfulness that is unmistakably akin of the job or calling of the watchman. It is safe to assert that every genuine follower of Jesus must exercise the roles of a watchman to one degree or the other.
_MEDITATION:_
*“Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.â€* (Luke 21:36 (KJV))

*THE AWAKENING OF THE WATCHERS*
_Key Bible Text:_
*“The time's coming when watchmen will call out from the hilltops of Ephraim: 'On your feet! Let's go to Zion, go to meet our GOD!"* (Jeremiah 31:6 (The Message))
_Bible Insight:_
Traditionally, the watchmen watch over the city. They are fort holders and fort keepers! They can also be likened to guards, or night or day or gate guards. They are in sense gate keepers. They ensure certain orders are preserved and peace and security maintained. They sacrifice their comfort for wellbeing of their jurisdiction (primary place of oversight responsibility)
Corruption or defeat begins from the watchmen. When watchmen are bought over or overcome, taking over the city becomes a piece of cake or a walk over. (2Kings 18:8) Likewise, to strengthen or build up a city, setting up watchtowers and installing watchmen over them is a necessary step if the city must be rebuilt despite opposition.
The above understanding, helps us as we see the context of today's key verse:
*_I will build you up again, and you, Virgin Israel, will be rebuilt. Again you will take up your timbrels and go out to dance with the joyful. Again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria; the farmers will plant them and enjoy their fruit. There will be a day when watchmen cry out on the hills of Ephraim, 'Come, let us go up to Zion, to the LORD our God.'" This is what the LORD says: "Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, 'LORD, save your people, the remnant of Israel.'_* (Jeremiah 31:4-7 (NIV))
For God to restore us, to build us up, there must come a day when the watchmen will awake again to their calling and responsibility. Today can and should be that day for you and I. We must not postpone it for God is ever ready. Waiting for the individual who will rise and say, *"Lord, I am ready to stand awake as your watchman in these last days"*
_MEDITATION:_
*“And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone. And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.â€* (2 Samuel 18:24-25 (KJV))

*PEOPLE & UNITY* (IV)
_Key Bible Text:_
*“In the end, people appreciate honest criticism far more than flattery."* (Proverbs 28:23 (NLT))
_Bible Insight:_
The trouble is, sometimes pride masquerades as religious zeal; and the most bigoted believers can be mistaken for devoted defenders of the faith and crusaders for the cause of Christ.
God’s servants don’t always have to be right. Even Paul was occasionally perplexed about the will of God (Acts 16:6–10; 2 Cor. 4:8). When other people don’t see things your way, trust God to show them what’s right (Phil. 3:15). And be sure to ask God to show you if perhaps you may be wrong!
*_Those of us who minister for Christ should strive to minister like Christ._* He washed the feet of twelve men who were unworthy of His presence, let alone His service. He received and helped multitudes of people, many of whom never accepted His message. He died for a world that doesn’t want Him. Why did He do it? Because it was the Father’s will, and Jesus delighted to do His Father’s will (Ps. 40:8).
And keep in mind that while you’re serving others, the Lord is serving
you. He’s working with you on earth (Mark 16:20) and equipping you from heaven (Heb. 13:20–21). No matter how painful or disappointing your service may seem to you, it’s not being wasted. God is building your character while He is building His church, and what He does will last forever. That makes even the criticisms worthwhile!
_MEDITATION:_
*“I once heard A. W. Tozer say, “Never be afraid of honest criticism. If the critic is wrong, you can help him; and if you’re wrong, he can help you. Either way, somebody’s helped.â€*

*PEOPLE & UNITY* (III)
_Key Bible Text:_
*“Therefore let anyone who thinks he stands [who feels sure that he has a steadfast mind and is standing firm], take heed lest he fall [into sin]."* (1 Corinthians 10:12 (The Message))
_Bible Insight:_
When in 1650 the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland opposed Oliver Cromwell and declared Charles II their king, Cromwell wrote them a letter of earnest appeal in which he said, among other things, “I beseech
you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken.â€
Appeal must precede attack if we are to act like Christians. The army of Israel was commanded to offer peace to a city before declaring war against it (Deut. 20:10–20), and that’s a good example for us to follow. Jesus instructed us to settle differences with people quickly and privately and to take the initiative in seeking peace (Matt. 5:21–26; 18:15–35).
The big problem, of course, is that we all think we have the right answer, and we’re prepared to defend our “convictions.†And when you add the implied threats that often accompany our “discussions†(“If you don’t do this, our family will leave the church, and a lot of people will follow us!â€), you have the potential for a real explosion. When that happens, it’s time to sit down together and read aloud in unison Philippians 2:1–18. The next step is to suggest a prayer meeting to ask God to help everybody obey what was just read.
I have in my study a small sign a friend made for me when he heard me quote in a sermon a favorite statement from Thomas Merton. Here’s the statement:
*_To consider persons and events and situations only in the light of their effect upon myself is to live on the doorstep of hell._*
If Merton is right, a lot of Christians are sitting on a hot seat because they expect everybody to agree with them and everything to go their way. Like Lucifer, they insist on being “like the Most High†(Isa. 14:14) and playing God in everybody’s life. The name of the malady is pride, and it’s a difficult disease to cure.
_MEDITATION:_
*“New Testament scholar William Barclay wrote, “Pride is the ground in which all the other sins grow, and the parent from which all the other sins come.†Among the sins that God hates most, pride heads the list (Prov. 6:16–17)."*

*PEOPLE & UNITY* (II)
_Key Bible Text:_
*“I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."* (1 Corinthians 1:11-13 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
You and I don’t have to manufacture unity in the church because it’s already there. We’re all one in Christ (Gal. 3:28), and the spiritual oneness of the body is a miracle of God’s grace (Eph. 4:1–6). No, we don’t have to manufacture unity; but we do have the obligation to maintain the unity that Jesus died to create—“endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace†(Eph. 4:3). So important is the unity of His people that Jesus prayed about it before He went to the cross ( John 17:22–24)
If among God’s people there’s a difference over fundamental Bible
doctrine, “the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints†( Jude 3), there can be no room for compromise. But let’s be sure it’s fundamental doctrine and not some secondary matter that somebody has blown out of proportion. For centuries, good and godly people have disagreed over the interpretations of certain Scriptures and have agreed to disagree without being disagreeable. *“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.â€* Augustine said that, and he’s right.
That third statement from Augustine is especially important: “In all things, charity.†Even when we defend the faith, we must behave like Christians: *“And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truthâ€* (2 Tim. 2:24–25). If they don’t repent, they’re the ones who have broken
the unity and left the fellowship (1 John 2:18–23). False doctrines cause divisions, and false teachers must be warned and avoided (Rom. 16:17–20).
_MEDITATION:_
*“But it’s been my experience that very few ministries divide over doctrine. Most differences among Christians center on personalities, methods of ministry, allocation of funds, and other noteworthy but nondoctrinal matters. Let a church receive a large bequest from a will, and the potential for division is astronomical. The trustees want to use the money to pave the parking lot. The Missions Committee wants to send it to the fields. The women want to renovate the kitchen, and the young people want to build a gym. Not only is loving money a root of all kinds of evil, but spending it can produce a good deal of evil."*
