*PUTTING GOD FIRST* (III)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country."* (Hebrews 11:13-14 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
Do our hearts burn for Jesus like this? Or did we receive a different gospel? We’ve been told that it’s in our becoming influential in this world that the world would come to know Jesus. So, we successfully deceive ourselves that all our self-seeking, self-glorifying ventures are for the cause of Christ. Well, they say when you repeat a lie often enough it begins to sound like truth. Because tell me when this has ever worked. *Those who have radically changed the world are those who lived as pilgrims in this world, declaring every day that this world is not their home.*
Have I said not to build wealth or lasting legacies? No. God gives wealth and the power to make it. But don’t get it twisted. Jesus didn’t die for that. He couldn’t have, else only believers would be rich and powerful. Call a thing by its name. What you have is ambition. But God does not need it to do His work on the earth. What He needs but sorely lacks are yielded people. People that don’t count their life as any value at all except it is spent doing specifically what He wants. *Don’t be successful at all the good things and miss the God thing for your life.*
John was not successful by any stretch of the human imagination. He dressed weird, ate weird, lived weird, and died young. But Jesus called him the greatest prophet to ever live, and so he was. Just re-examine your priorities today and let me examine mine. Do we want God as an end or as a means to an end? If God withholds all the blessings, if all you had was salvation, would following Jesus still be worth it to you?
_MEDITATION:_
*"And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city."* (Hebrews 11:15-16 (KJV))

*PUTTING GOD FIRST* (II)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"But more than anything else, put God's work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well."* (Matthew 6:33 (CEV))
_Bible Insight:_
And for those of us that like to outsource our seeking. It’s wherever people say it’s happening, that’s where you will plant yourself. Jesus said “Seek ye!†You do the seeking. You go out of your way to find the kingdom. But seeking is hard and it’s not pleasant to the flesh. That’s why many don’t bother. But while others are enamored by the many activities, the man of God must stand by and observe and ask “where is God?†There and there alone must he be found.
The story is told of a couple who managed to flee one of these countries in the Middle East that was facing intense persecution. The couple emigrated to America and stayed there for only a short time before deciding they wanted to go back. Their reason? America’s Christianity was making them spiritually dull. They’d rather go back to the land of persecution and be spiritually alert. Than stay in the land of abundance and be spiritually dull. They left God’s own country and headed back home almost immediately after they landed.
If you’re not a believer, I don’t expect you to understand this. But if you’re a believer and you think this couple is foolish, I don’t care if you’re a pastor, it’s only exposed how secularised you’ve become. We’ve heard of missionaries in places of intense persecution who ask for prayers. This church asked this missionary what they should pray for: deliverance? Judgment? But the missionaries said no. They didn’t want to be “delivered†from these places. They just wanted strength to go on and more open doors to reach more people with the Gospel.
_MEDITATION:_
*"And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness."* (Acts 4:29-31 (KJV))

*PUTTING GOD FIRST*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."* (Matthew 6:33 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
You know what still makes me shudder about the story of Naomi? It’s not just that Elimelech didn’t consult God before carrying his family away from the promised land to Moab. It’s not just that this was Moab of all places. It’s that he didn’t mind moving all that distance away from Shiloh, Israel’s place of worship at the time. He didn’t mind being so far away from the house of God. He was so bothered about his physical welfare and that of his family, that he didn’t mind that for ten years, neither he nor his wife nor his children had gone up to the Lord. Where were they keeping the feasts? How were they sacrificing? Did they ever travel back for Passover? The Day of Atonement?
And this isn’t far-fetched from what we have today. Believers will consider every other thing except how this move they want to make will affect their spiritual welfare. We just get up and move. We will do painstaking research for the best schools that will give us the best leverage in life and we don’t mind traveling halfway round the world for it. Even if it means cutting ourselves off from channels that God has placed in our life for our spiritual well being. We’re quick to say “God is everywhere.†But if we really do believe this, why can’t we trust the God who is everywhere to favour us anywhere?
Do you really care about the church you attend? Do you care about whether your children are being fed right? You check their report card, are you also checking their spiritual report card? Your child can operate your phone at 4/5, but you say they are too young to understand salvation or the operations of the Spirit. You go out of your way to network for the sake of your business or career. What have you gone out of your way to do to ensure you stay spiritually sane?
You don’t want to be seen with people that their jim jim is too much. They are not cool. They don’t dress well. Their English is not polished. But you’ll pander to people whose guts you hate if there’s even a chance they could advance your career. Then you’ll justify your nonsense with “wisdom is profitable to direct.†“Jesus said we should be wise as serpents.†Sha don’t go from being “as wise as†to being the thing gan gan.
_MEDITATION:_
*"In summary, be more deliberate about your spiritual sanity. Jesus said “Seek ye…†It’s active. It’s forceful. Actively search, pursue after, run after, chase it! Chase the kingdom! Go and look for it. Turn everything upside down if you have to. Don’t settle. You must have the best! No be for spiritual matter dem dey do anywhere belle face. You won’t do that for the place you work, or for the house you choose to live in, or for the school you or your kids attend. But you’d do that for the church you want to anchor your spiritual growth on? What are your priorities, dear saint? Who is teaching you these things?!"*
