_Key Bible Text:_
*"Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy."* (1 Cor 14:1)
_Bible Insight:_
Paul is basically saying that DESIRE is all a man with the spirit needs to manifest a spiritual gift.
As a result he is exhorting us to desire spiritual gifts and stresses prophecy as he states it brings the most edification in a local church context.
Now if all were limited to some gifts, he would not say this at all!
He then goes on to state that he wants all to speak In tongues or even better prophesy!
*"I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying."* (1 Cor 14:5)
So to answer our question. Do all speak with tongues? The answer is NO!
But can all speak with tongues? Every believer? The answer is yes! Should they earnestly desire to! For if they have the Holyghost and all gifts are in him then every manifestation is a possibility should they desire it!
I hope this helped?
_MEDITATION:_
*All gifts are in the Holy Ghost and you have the Holy Ghost. Therefore, every manifestation is a possibility if only you desire it!"*

_Key Bible Text:_
*"And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ."* (Ephesians 4:11-12)
_Bible Insight:_
What exactly does Paul mean by the statement/question-- “Do all speak in tongues?"
The context of this Chapter is the body of Christ. The breakdown above is speaking to functions.
Hence, he begins with apostles, prophets, teachers which are ministry gifts then miracles, gifts of healings, tongues and interpretation which are spiritual gifts.
So the clear answer here will be "No".
In the body of Christ, all do not have the function in the body to be apostles, prophets, workers of miracles and speakers of tongues.
Don’t miss this .
All do not have the same function! This is because Paul is speaking clearly as regards MINISTRY. For when we see Paul speak functionally about the body of Christ he refers to ministry function.
*"And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone"* (Eph 2:20)
All don’t have the same function ministerially but note this. Everyone can manifest spiritual gifts if they DESIRE IT.
*"But covet earnestly the best gifts."* 1 Cor 12:31
_MEDITATION:_
*Everyone can manifest spiritual gifts if they DESIRE IT."*

_Key Bible Text:_
*"Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?"* (1 Corinthians 12:30)
_Bible Insight:_
The second thing to understand is that Paul is bringing order to how the gifts are manifested in a typical church service.
The teaching on the gifts has a local church service context. It is why he says in 1 Corinthians 14:23-- *If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?*
And again in 1 Corinthians 14:26, it says *"How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying."*
It is why the emphasis of 1 Corinthians 12,13, 14 is actually edification and love. For a healthy body is one that exists in harmony. If the body doesn’t edify itself then the body eventually gets diseased and then dies.
Now that we have gotten that out of the way, what exactly does Paul mean by the statement/question-- “Do all speak in tongues?"

_Key Bible Text:_
*"To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another (divers) kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues."* (1 Corinthians 12:10)
_Bible Insight:_
Do all speak in tongues?
Yesterday we laid a foundation on this subject matter and explained Acts 2. We were able to explain “other tongues" and “new tongues" seeing that in the operation or manifestation of tongues there are diversities.
So we even find that when Paul mentions this gift in his exegesis on spiritual gifts he states that they are diversities.
Please note that the word “divers†is in the italic and isn’t in the original Greek. What we have is actually “kinds of tongues".
So Paul is saying that the tongues have varieties. This already accommodates “other tongues" and “new tongues" as explained yesterday.
I want us to examine the question-- Do all speak in tongues?
To understand what Paul is saying here you need to get the context of 1 Cor. 12 - 1 Cor. 14.
Paul begins to use the metaphor of the human body and the peculiar functions to explain the functions of the individual member of the body of Christ.
This means we must view the gifts of the spirit via the lens of activities beneficial to the body. So just as the eyes seeing gives direction to the leg in walking, so also must the gifts manifested in the body be viewed as aiding the entire body.

*If the body doesn’t edify itself then the body eventually gets diseased and then dies.*

_Key Bible Text:_
*"And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language."* (Acts 2:5-6 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
This was not tongues and interpretation. This was a miracle! Jews who didn’t speak the language of the gentiles were enabled by Gods spirit to communicate to people from “every nation under heaven" (See vs 5).
The message is clear.God is back for the gentiles and not just the Jews! The question now arises.
If the tongues spoken here was that of other nations unknown to the speaker, shouldn’t this be the only manifestation of tongues? The answer to this is found in the scriptures!
There are a few adjectival prefixes used before tongues whenever it appears in scriptures.
1. Other tongues Acts 2:4
Other is in the Greek “heterais" which is in the dative case, feminine gender and singular. It is an adjective which means “another of a different kind" In context this is speaking to languages unknown to a party. It is different but not unknown to all. It is unknown to a few which in Acts 2:4 would be the disciples.
2. New tongues Mark 16:17
*"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;"* (Mark 16:17)
'NEW' here is from the root Greek “kainos" but written here as “kanais" which is in the dative feminine plural.
Kainos means new on the scene and never existed before. So _new tongues_ is referring to a dialect alien to what is spoken by any tribe on the earth. This is different from _other tongues._
It is this _new tongues_ that is so defined in 1cor 14:2-3 by Paul.
See?
No man understands this tongue. It is not an earthly language but a supernatural one.
The word unknown was not in the original though we can see why the translators put that word there.
I will stop here for now.
Hope this helped?
_MEDITATION:_
*For he that speaketh in an (unknown) tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.* (1 Corinthians 14:2)
