*SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP* (VII)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"It is like one of their own prophets once said, "The people of Crete always tell lies. They are greedy and lazy like wild animals." That surely is a true saying. And you should be hard on such people, so you can help them grow stronger in their faith."* (Titus 1:12-13 (CEV))
_Bible Insight:_
Spiritual leadership must never be a place for laziness, greediness and talkativeness. Rather it is a place for hard work and discipline. Don't forget, that the least worker in church is a part of the spiritual leadership ladder. Even the security officials of the church are part or ought to be part of the spiritual leadership. Why should liers and ungodly believers or unsaved persons be manning the security apparatus of the church?
Recall that in the preceding verse it says *"But you must make them be quiet. They are after money, and they upset whole families by teaching what they should not."* (Titus 1:11) Then it continues to describe those that should be silenced or phased out of spiritual leadership-- those who tell lies and exhibit laziness like animals.
The Bible counsels us to be hard on those who are liars and are lazy-- lazy liars. Never excuse or exclude yourself from these set of persons-- because laziness and lying come in different shades and forms. The temptation of laziness and lying, visits everyone. When they come knocking, remember to obey the instruction: BE HARD ON YOURSELF!
DON'T SUFFER YOURSELF TO LIE OR BE LAZY if you are a spiritual leader. Judge yourself by yourself. Shun that lazy lying spirit. As a spiritual leader why or how can you be helping others to grow when you yourself are caught up in the unholy embrace of lies and laziness?
Only when you are hard on yourself enough to overcome lying and laziness will you be better equipped to be hard on others who show the same sinful pattern.
_MEDITATION:_
*One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith.* (Titus 1:12-13 (KJV))

*SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP* (VI)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"There are many who don't respect authority, and they fool others by talking nonsense. This is especially true of some Jewish followers. But you must make them be quiet. They are after money, and they upset whole families by teaching what they should not."* (Titus 1:10-11 (CEV))
_Bible Insight:_
Spiritual leadership must stick to the message of Christ because many holding themselves out as spiritual leaders fall short of the standard of Christ, preaching deceitfully for their selfish gains. Many do not use spiritual leadership to bring glory to God but to bring glory to themselves.
The best way to stop those people is by being the example of what a true spiritual leadership should be, and by sticking doggedly and relentlessly on the message of Christ. Those charlatans are put in their place when many more spiritual leaders stand and stay on the message of Christ.
People assume spiritual leadership for the sake of personal financial gains. True spiritual leadership must make the focus of the message to be Christ. Families must be taught right with the message of Christ. Everyone who may have been misled by the errors of ungodly "spiritual leaders" must be given sufficient opportunity to discover the truth as more spiritual leaders stick to the message of Christ.
_MEDITATION:_
*For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.* (Titus 1:10-11 (KJV))

*SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP* (V)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"They must stick to the true message they were taught, so that their good teaching can help others and correct everyone who opposes it."* (Titus 1:8-9 (CEV))
_Bible Insight:_
Spiritual leadership confers a non-negotiable obligation to become an exemplary leader.
Nothing challenges and drives compliance as consistent and careful examples from a leader or the setman.
The spirituality of leadership is proven in the laying of examples and foot prints for others to follow. Spiritual leadership is always built around a message. Kingdom focused spiritual leadership is centered on the message of Christ!
When we stick to the message of Christ, by word and by conduct, then the message will have the most impact and result on others. Sticking to the message of Christ isn't as easy as it sounds but that's the only way we can be true spiritual leaders for Christ. We are not called for the easy but for principles.
Spiritual leaders lose the right or ability to help and correct others when they lose their focus and stay on the message of Christ.
_MEDITATION:_
*Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.* (Titus 1:9 (KJV))

*SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP* (IIIV)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Instead, they must be friendly to strangers and enjoy doing good things. They must also be sensible, fair, pure, and self-controlled. They must stick to the true message they were taught, so that their good teaching can help others and correct everyone who opposes it."* (Titus 1:8-9 (CEV))
_Bible Insight:_
Spiritual leadership confers a non-negotiable obligation to become a servant leader. It is one that runs on the oil of sacrifice and patience. It is not a place for showmanship and carnal superiority complex or flexing of muscles. Spiritual leadership is a place that calls the leader to lay down his/her life for the led. It is no light matter.
Thus instead of being "bossy, quick-tempered, heavy drinkers, bullies, or dishonest in business" the spiritual leader is invited and mandated to do the direct opposite:-
1. Be friendly to strangers and enjoy doing good things: This is the duty of care to the uncared and unloved or unlovable. It is the duty of hospitality, warmness and devotion to good deeds.
2. They must also be sensible, fair, pure, and self-controlled: This is the duty for good sense of judgment, purity, and self-control. Spiritual leaders must never take justice, equity, fairness for granted. It is a mark that affirms how spiritual indeed a leader is.
Jesus applied this so many times. To the woman caught in the act of adultery, he applied a righteous sense and fairness to judge the matter, while commending the woman to a lifestyle of purity- "Go and sin no more". He himself led a pure & self controlled life, so well that he boldly asserts that the prince of this world comes and finds nothing against or in him. That's a man with spiritual leadership that has sanctified himself for the sake of his disciples. If Jesus would go that far, what excuse do you have, dear spiritual leader?
_MEDITATION:_
*Spiritual leadership strips the leader of the ego, pride and glam that could come with leadership. In its place, is the cloak of purity, sanctification, servant leadership and righteousness*

*SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP* (III)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Church officials are in charge of God's work, and so they must also have a good reputation. They must not be bossy, quick-tempered, heavy drinkers, bullies, or dishonest in business."* (Titus 1:7(CEV))
_Bible Insight:_
Spiritual leadership must shoulder the responsibility of church growth, discipline and wellbeing. Church leadership that's not spiritual enough to be in charge of God's work is totally unacceptable. Spiritual leadership is not limited to the church pastors and elders. Spiritual leadership includes all church workers & church leaders whether they are Sunday school workers, departmental leaders or security officials.
Spiritual leadership must be able to have and produce spiritual content and stamina that's strong enough to permeate the entirety of the spectrum of the church officials. Only spiritual leadership that's completely saturated by strong quality spiritual content & stamina that can produce a strong and vibrant church growth, discipline and wellbeing.
Spiritual leadership must therefore be self-correcting. This means it should be structured in such a way that there is a check and balance from and of every leader or worker. This will ensure the kind of healthy reputation that's required of spiritual leaders. It is in this culture of or structured check and balance that spiritual leaders are charged thus: *"They must not be bossy, quick-tempered, heavy drinkers, bullies, or dishonest in business."*
Technically speaking, this charge goes to every member of the spiritual leadership ladder, from top to bottom! Spiritual leadership is not a place for bossy style of leadership, quick-temperament, heavy drinking (unless holy ghost drunkenness), bullying or fraudulent business deals.
_MEDITATION:_
*Spiritual leadership patterned after Christ, challenges virtually everything we know about leadership*
