*WHO WILL RECEIVE CHRIST BECAUSE OF YOU?*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word."* (John 17: 20 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' prayer in John 17:20 expands His intercession beyond the original disciples to include all future believers.
He specifically mentions those who will believe in Him through the disciples' word, highlighting the crucial role of evangelism and discipleship in the spread of the Gospel. This statement emphasizes Jesus' concern for the broader community of believers that would arise from the disciples' ministry.
By praying for future believers, Jesus demonstrates His desire for a universal and eternal impact. He envisions a community of faith that transcends time, geography, and cultural boundaries. This verse underscores the idea that Jesus' mission and message are not limited to a specific group or era but are intended for all people, across all generations.
The lesson from this verse is that our faith is not isolated or exclusive but is part of a larger, global, and historical community of believers. As followers of Jesus, we are connected to the original disciples and to all those who have believed in Him throughout the centuries.
This realization should inspire us to share the Gospel with others, knowing that our words and actions can have a lasting impact on future generations.

*Living Beyond Self*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth."* (John 17: 19 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' statement in John 17:19 reveals His willingness to sanctify Himself for the sake of His disciples.
The phrase "I sanctify myself" suggests that Jesus is setting Himself apart for a specific purpose. In this context, Jesus' sanctification is closely tied to His impending sacrifice on the cross, where He would bear the sins of humanity.
By sanctifying Himself, Jesus provides the means for His disciples to be sanctified through the truth. This statement emphasizes the connection between Jesus' sacrifice and the spiritual growth of His followers. Just as Jesus is set apart for a holy purpose, His disciples are also set apart to live holy lives, empowered by the truth of God's Word.
The lesson from this verse is that Jesus' sacrifice on the cross provides the basis for our sanctification. As believers, we are called to live holy lives, set apart for God's purposes. This is made possible through Jesus' willingness to sanctify Himself on our behalf. By embracing the truth of God's Word and relying on Jesus' sacrifice, we can experience the transformative power of sanctification in our lives.

*NOT OF THIS WORLD*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world."* (John 17: 15-16 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' prayer in John 17:15-16 reveals His desire for His disciples' protection and preservation in a world filled with evil. He does not ask the Father to remove them from the world, but rather to keep them from the evil that pervades it. This request acknowledges that believers will continue to live in the world, but they are not to be conformed to its sinful patterns.
Jesus emphasizes that His disciples are not of the world, just as He is not of the world. This statement highlights the distinction between believers and unbelievers. While believers live in the world, they are not part of its sinful system. They have been called out of darkness into God's marvelous light and are expected to live according to God's standards.
The lesson from this verse is that believers are to be in the world but not of the world. We are to engage with the world, sharing the Gospel and demonstrating God's love, but we must not be influenced by its evil values and practices.

*I HAVE FINISHED THE WORK*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was."* (John 17: 4-5 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' statement in John 17:4-5 is a declaration of His accomplishment and a request for restoration. He affirms that He has glorified the Father on earth by completing the work assigned to Him. This work includes His teachings, miracles, and ultimately, His sacrifice on the cross. Jesus' statement emphasizes His commitment to fulfilling the Father's will.
Jesus then asks the Father to glorify Him with the same glory they shared before the world was created. This request is not about seeking personal aggrandizement but about returning to His pre-incarnate state of glory. Jesus' desire is to regain the full expression of His divine glory, which was veiled during His earthly ministry.
The lesson from this verse is that our purpose and fulfillment are found in completing the work God has assigned to us.
Like Jesus, we should strive to glorify God through our lives and work. Moreover, Jesus' request for restoration reminds us that our ultimate hope and desire should be to share in God's glory, not seeking earthly recognition or praise. By focusing on God's will and glory, we can find true fulfillment and purpose in our lives.
_MEDITATION:_

*THAT THEY MAY BE ONE*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are."* (John 17: 11 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' prayer in John 17:11 highlights His concern for His disciples' well-being and unity after His departure from the world. He asks the Father to "keep" or protect them, using the Greek word "tereo," which means to guard or watch over. Jesus recognizes that His disciples will face challenges and dangers in the world, and He seeks the Father's protection on their behalf.
Jesus also prays that His disciples may be one, just as He and the Father are one. This unity is not just a superficial harmony, but a deep and abiding fellowship that reflects the unity of the Trinity. Jesus desires that His disciples experience this same level of unity, which will enable them to stand strong against the forces of darkness and to fulfill their mission in the world.
The lesson from this verse is that unity among believers is a vital aspect of our relationship with God and our effectiveness in the world. As we seek to fulfill our mission and navigate the challenges of life, we must prioritize unity and pray for God's protection and guidance. By doing so, we can experience the same level of unity and fellowship that Jesus shares with the Father, and we can fulfill our calling as disciples of Jesus Christ.

*CONFIDENT OF VICTORY*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy."* (John 16: 20 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' statement in John 16:33 is a conclusion to His farewell discourse, where He prepares His disciples for His departure and the challenges they will face. He emphasizes that His words are meant to bring peace to His followers, a peace that is not dependent on external circumstances, but on their relationship with Him.
Jesus acknowledges that His followers will face tribulation in the world. The term "tribulation" refers to the pressures, difficulties, and persecutions that believers will encounter as they live out their faith in a hostile world. This is a realistic assessment of the challenges that believers will face.
Despite the inevitability of tribulation, Jesus encourages His followers to "be of good cheer." This phrase is often translated as "take heart" or "be courageous." Jesus is urging His followers to remain confident and hopeful, even in the face of adversity.
The basis for this confidence is Jesus' declaration that He has "overcome the world." This statement is a testament to Jesus' victory over sin, death, and the forces of evil.
_MEDITATION:_
*As believers, we can draw strength and courage from Jesus' triumph, knowing that He has already secured the ultimate victory. This realization enables us to face tribulation with hope and confidence, rather than fear and despair.*

*JOY IS COMING & IT IS HERE*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.."* (John 16: 20 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' statement in John 16:20 highlights the contrast between the disciples' emotional experience and that of the world.
He tells them that they will weep and lament, implying a deep sense of sorrow and grief. This is likely a reference to the disciples' emotional response to Jesus' impending death and departure.
In contrast, Jesus notes that the world will rejoice. This is because the world sees Jesus' death as a victory over a perceived threat to their power and status. The world's rejoicing, however, is short-sighted and misguided, as it fails to recognize the true significance of Jesus' death and resurrection.
Despite the disciples' sorrow, Jesus promises that it will be turned into joy. This is a profound statement, as it highlights the transformative power of Jesus' death and resurrection. The disciples' sorrow will be replaced with joy when they understand the true nature of Jesus' mission and the victory He has achieved over sin and death.
The lesson from this verse is that believers can experience profound joy even in the midst of sorrow and adversity. This is because our hope is not based on temporal circumstances, but on the eternal promises of God. As we walk through difficult times, we can trust that God is working to transform our sorrow into joy, just as He did for the disciples through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

*THE COST OF FOLLOWING JESUS*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service."* (John 16: 1-2 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' statement in John 16:1-2 serves as a warning to His disciples about the persecution they will face because of their faith in Him.
He wants to prepare them for the challenges ahead, so they will not be caught off guard or stumble in their faith. Jesus knows that the world will hate His followers, just as it hated Him.
The specific persecution Jesus mentions is being put out of the synagogues. This would have been a severe consequence for the disciples, as the synagogue was the central gathering place for Jewish communities. Being expelled from the synagogue would mean social ostracism, loss of community, and even economic hardship.
Jesus also warns that the persecution will escalate to the point where people will think they are doing God's service by killing His followers. This is a sobering reminder that the world's hatred for God can manifest in violent and destructive ways. Jesus' words were fulfilled in the early Christian church, as believers faced intense persecution and martyrdom. And this is still being fulfilled today in different ways and in many places.
The lesson from this verse is that following Jesus comes with a cost. As believers, we should expect to face opposition, persecution, and even hatred from the world. Social media & bloggers have many of them too. However, Jesus wants us to be prepared and not be offended or caught off guard. Instead, we should stand firm in our faith, knowing that our suffering is not in vain, but rather serves as a testament to our allegiance to Christ.

*THE HOLY SPIRIT & THE BELIEVER*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come."* (John 16: 13 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' statement in John 16:13 emphasizes the vital role of the Holy Spirit in guiding believers into all truth.
The phrase "Spirit of truth" highlights the Holy Spirit's character as a truthful and reliable guide. The Holy Spirit leads believers into a deeper understanding of God's truth, revealing new insights and perspectives that were previously unknown (at least to the believer).
The verse also emphasizes the Holy Spirit's dependence on God the Father and Jesus Christ. The phrase "he shall not speak of himself" indicates that the Holy Spirit does not act independently, but rather speaks what He hears from the Father and the Son. This underscores the unity and cooperation within the Trinity, as well as the Holy Spirit's role as a messenger and spokesperson for God.
The lesson from this verse is that believers can trust the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth. As we seek to understand God's will and purposes, we can rely on the Holy Spirit to illuminate our minds and hearts. This promise is especially relevant in times of uncertainty or confusion, when we need the Holy Spirit's guidance to navigate life's challenges and make wise decisions.

*THE HOLY SPIRIT & THE WORLD* (2)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged."* (John 16: 9-11 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Jesus' statement in John 16:9-11 highlights the threefold conviction that the Holy Spirit brings to the world. Firstly, the Holy Spirit convicts people "of sin, because they believe not on me." This emphasizes the fundamental problem of humanity's rebellion against God, which is manifested in unbelief towards Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit's conviction of sin serves as a wake-up call, urging people to recognize their need for salvation.
The second aspect of the Holy Spirit's conviction is "of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more." Jesus' departure from the world and return to the Father highlights the righteousness that He has accomplished on behalf of humanity. The Holy Spirit convicts people of this righteousness, revealing the perfect standard of God's justice and the fulfillment of that standard in Jesus Christ.
The third aspect of the Holy Spirit's conviction is "of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged." This refers to the defeat of Satan, the ruler of this world, through Jesus' death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit convicts people of the certainty of God's judgment, urging them to respond to the gospel and avoid the condemnation that awaits those who reject Jesus Christ.
The lesson from these verses is that the Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in convicting people of their need for salvation. By highlighting sin, righteousness, and judgment, the Holy Spirit prepares people's hearts to respond to the gospel.
_MEDITATION:_
