*FORSAKING ALL*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?"* (Matthew 19:27 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
ANOTHER hallmark of Christianity is FORSAKING ALL ELSE!
If CHRIST does not cost you the loss of everything else, you have not started.
This is the principle of laying all on the altar. Living sacrifices don't have anything to hold unto save Christ.
Peter, a true missionary disciple of Christ, wanted to know what they stand to gain haven left all to follow Christ.
The lesson here is, HAVE WE TRULY LEFT ALL TO FOLLOW CHRIST?
The old time christians sang songs like "Take the whole world, but give me Jesus" because they thoroughly understood the necessity of following Christ from a place of FORSAKING ALL ELSE but Christ.
_MEDITATION:_
*Matthew 19:29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.*

*A Forgiving Heart*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?"* (Matthew 18:21 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
The hallmark of Christianity is FORGIVENESS!
TAKE forgiveness away, and you don't have salvation.
Take forgiveness away, and Christ has not accomplished anything.
Therefore anyone who claims to follow Christ, must know that Jesus CHRIST is a forgiver.
If you don't walk and live in forgiveness, there is no forgiveness from the Father for you. Period.
_MEDITATION:_
*Matthew 18:35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.*

*Peter, the missionary* (5)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light."* (Matthew 17:1-2 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Proper discipleship is the backbone of a fruitful missionary lifestyle. Jesus understood this and perfected this example. He discipled Peter (Among others, of course) by bringing him closer.
Jesus could have gone for this all important encounter without any of the disciples but then, in a sense, the purpose of the transfiguration experience would not have been completed.
When you read other accounts of the transfiguration mountain experience, you will see where the cloud overshadowed them, Elijah and Moses taken away, and a heavenly voice declaring, "This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased"
Therefore, it is safe to say, that the transfiguration mountain experience was not particularly for JESUS BUT FOR PETER and the two others so that they can be AUTHENTIC AND INTIMATE WITNESSES and missionaries.
Thus, it leads us to state that the missionary must be a holder of intimate encounters and deeper relationship with the Master Missionary-- Jesus!
_MEDITATION:_
*You must seek Jesus deeply and daily and stay sensitive to moments of divine and biblical encounters with God to be an effective missionary.*

*Peter, the missionary* (4)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee."* (Matthew 16:22 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Every missionary, like every soldier, is expected to be ready to die or suffer inconvenience for the cause. Jesus, being the chief of missionaries, laid down this example and principle. Peter, at this point, had not yet learned this principle.
So Jesus began to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. But Peter resisted that line of thinking.
This in turn, provoked the following lines of response from Jesus:-
*Matthew 16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.*
The rebuke is neither inappropriate nor disproportionate. If you take lightly such matters of self preservation over and above God's will, you have been deceived by the enemy.
The Lord demands that His missionaries live above the fear of death, that we be living sacrifices. No living sacrifice should be AFRAID to be a sacrifice or to live sacrificially!
_MEDITATION:_
*Matthew 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.*

*Peter, the missionary* (3)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."* (Matthew 16:17-18 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
The revelation was definitely out of earthly frequency. "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" was an answer mined from the realms of superior insight and wisdom.
Peter indeed struck something that provoked the next lines of Jesus. "Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven."
Jesus then continued, *"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it"*
This does not mean that Peter was the rock upon which Jesus would build His church. It means that this high level revelation was the rock upon which the church of Christ is built.
So when you see the unlearned and confused saying "Jesus is NOT God" just know that they are getting that from the enemy of God, the devil.
This is foundational to the faith of the Lord Jesus. And every missionary understands this.
_MEDITATION:_
*It takes an encounter with the Jesus who is the son of God (and thus God himself) to be an effective missionary.*

*Peter, the missionary* (2)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus."* (Matthew 14:28-29)
_Bible Insight_
They had just seen a ghost. So they thought. Whoever walks on water? But Jesus replied, "It is I be not afraid." Peter, bold and daring, responded, "If it is you, ask me to come on the water"
Such things are easy for Jesus. "Come on then", Jesus said. Peter, stepped out of the boat, walking on water. A few minutes later, he began to sink as he became afraid of the storms and waves splashing all around him. His basic science knowledge had quickly attacked him. He reached out to Jesus, crying, "Lord, Save Me!"
I see three kinds of faith at work.
1. The faith that says, Bid me to come walking on water.
2. The faith that actually walks on water.
3. And the faith that says "Lord, Save Me, I am sinking"
In Peter's life, he actually experienced all three phases in his missionary calling.
Why was it only Peter that could ask the Lord to order him to come walking on water? That's a level of faith.
Jesus never said, "Peter, Come". He simply said, "Come!". Why was it only Peter that left the boat to walk on water?
When Peter sank, he immediately knew who to call upon for help. Who do you call when your faith seems to fail you?! It takes faith in God's ability to save, to call him in the time of trouble.
_MEDITATION:_
*As a missionary, no matter the level your faith maybe at, keep pressing from one degree of faith to another higher degree. It is okay to experience the walking on water faith. It is also okay to experience the Lord Save Me Faith. More importantly, keep pressing towards higher levels of faith*

*Peter, the missionary*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."* (Matthew 4:18-19 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
When Jesus called Peter, Peter's brother Andrew was called at the same time. Here was one promise or missions statement Jesus made:-
FOLLOW ME, AND I WILL MAKE YOU FISHERS OF MEN!
Peter was a fisherman. But when Jesus came into his life and he also opened his life to Jesus, He became a fisher of men!
Take a closer look at the life of Peter. When you do, you will understand what Jesus meant when he said, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." You will also understand what it means to be a fisher of men or a missionary.
In applying this, we must recognize that there is no other promise Christ has made to us other than this same one-- follow me and I will make you fishers of men.
Let's say you are a doctor, when you really follow Jesus, you become a doctor that tends to the souls of men. If a lawyer, you become a lawyer that advocates for the salvation of the souls of men. If an Engineer, an engineer that ensures that the spiritual structures of men are aligned with the Father. Etc
_MEDITATION:_
*Do you know that you cannot follow Jesus who was a missionary, and turn out to be anything less than a missionary as well?*

*ACTS 1:8 & ACTS 8:1* (3)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"...And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles."* (Acts 8:1 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
So we can say the Lord used or allowed persecution to serve as a prompt or catalyst to get them back to the divine order:-
"Witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in Judea, and in Samaria and unto the uttermost parts of the earth"
But be that as it may, when you read Acts 8:4 it says, *"Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word."*
The scattering in itself is not enough. As they scattered to Judea, Samaria and uttermost parts of the earth, they went everywhere preaching the word.
Think about that for a moment. Would you have preached the word of God in similar circumstances if you were in their shoes? Or would you have been full of excuses why you can't even get yourself to preach the word!?
Finally, note that the 12 apostles remained in Jerusalem in spite of the scattering persecution. They were not too afraid to run out of of Jerusalem because the Lord had told them to evangelize Jerusalem AND Judea, AND Samaria, AND unto the uttermost parts of the earth.
_MEDITATION:_
*IF PERSECUTION did not stop the early church from preaching the word everywhere they went, what excuses do you think is valid for not preaching the word habitually?*
