How many times do you find yourself starting or ending a sentence with the following two words: “One dayâ€? Whether you’re starting off by saying “One day I will start my own businessâ€; or if you’re ending a thought “…we’ll do gardening, have holiday parties… a place we can call our own, it would be great (long pause)…One dayâ€.
Fantasizing about the future is very human. In fact, we’re one of the only species that can consciously think about the future. Fantasizing about the past is the same. Reminiscing of the ‘good old days’ or transgressing oneself to a previous event or period of time is something we all do.
Whether we’re thinking about the past or thinking about the future, both thoughts are accomplishing the same thing: preventing us from seeing and being in the present. We are all victims of this; getting caught up in our thoughts that seem to flow through our minds like waves of an ocean. Wandering on auto-pilot barely aware of our surroundings. Constant thoughts tied to the past or the future is like walking around with various tints of sunglasses. Depending on the day, how clearly are you seeing what’s right in front of you? Or worse, are you blind to any current opportunities and waiting for X day to do Y? “When I retire, when I make more money, when this issue ends, when this, when that…STOP!â€
