*A PROMISE TO BE WAITED FOR*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me."* (Acts 1: 4 (KJV))
_Bible Insight_
Acts 1:4 highlights Jesus' final instructions to His disciples before His ascension. He gathers them together and commands them to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father. This promise, as Jesus explains, is something He had previously mentioned to them. The disciples are instructed to remain in Jerusalem, indicating that their mission is not to disperse immediately, but to wait for a specific event.
The lesson from this verse is the importance of waiting on God's timing and promises. Jesus had promised the disciples that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49), and now He instructs them to wait for this promise to be fulfilled. This waiting period would prepare the disciples for their future ministry and empower them to be effective witnesses. Similarly, as followers of Christ, we must learn to wait on God's timing and promises, trusting that He is working everything out for our good.
In the context of Acts, this verse sets the stage for the events of Pentecost, where the disciples receive the Holy Spirit's power (Acts 2:1-4). The waiting period in Jerusalem allows the disciples to focus on prayer and fellowship, ultimately preparing them for the significant events that would unfold. May we, like the disciples, learn to wait patiently on God's promises, trusting in His sovereignty and goodness.
