*Faith And Works*
_Key Bible Text:_
*Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.* (Romans 3:20 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
This passage deals with true faith and counterfeit faith.
Counterfeit faith is dead (v.17). Why is it dead? It does not have works. And the works James is talking about is works of love (v.15-16). Jesus talks about such faith in Matthew 25 in the parable of sheep and goats. People who enter God’s kingdom don’t just claim to have faith, but demonstrate this faith by compassion and love. True faith results in good works and bears fruit (John 15:5-6).
Counterfeit faith is deceptive (v.18). True faith is not just intellectual, theoretical or some kind of feeling. It is accompanied by a transformed life. Even demons believe and fear God. Our pious life, good intentions, religious duty, and church attendance can be deceptive if not accompanied by a transformed heart and life. Jesus says we have to be born again.
True faith is illustrated by Abraham and Rahab. In v.21, Abraham was justified by works and in v.24 Rahab was also justified by works. Does this contradict Ephesians 2:8 and Romans 3:20 which says no one will be justified by works?
Paul and James are not contradicting each other. Paul is talking about justification and James is talking about demonstration. You cannot be justified by works, rather we are justified by grace alone, through faith alone and in Christ alone. However, this justified faith is never alone, but accompanied, validated and demonstrated by works of love.
Abraham believed in the promise of God, and it resulted in his act of offering Isaac on the altar. Rahab believed in the promise of God, and it resulted in providing refuge for the spies and risking her own life.
True faith is trusting God’s means to save us through Christ. True faith results in putting our life, hopes, dreams and decisions on the line and choosing to trust and obey God, even when it does not make sense or it's inconvenient to us.
MEDITATION:
*How do we know if we are being transformed by the gospel? What can be the evidence for our genuine walk with Christ? How do we know our faith is real?*

*Warning Against Favoritism*
_Key Bible Text:_
*My brethren, show no partiality as you hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory.*
(James 2:1 (RSV))
_Bible Insight:_
Showing favoritism was as much a problem back then as it is today, even in the church. We constantly judge people based on external appearances. Our culture celebrates those who are rich and famous, it reveres those with power, worships those with success and listens to educated elites. We see this even in the church. Authority and recognition are given to people with money, status, education or even holding key positions in the government or corporate world. There is nothing wrong with success in this world, but why do we show favoritism?
These signs of favoritism show a deeper heart issue. It is an issue of glory. Favoritism reveals what we truly glorify in our hearts. We esteem power, sex, money and fame more than anything in this world. We are ready to exchange anything for what we glorify. We tend to compromise, around the values we hold high.
He was born in a manger, a feeding trough for animals. He was poor and did not have a home. He was rejected by the religious and social elites. Jesus became unattractive so we can be made attractive through His righteousness. Jesus was rejected so we can be accepted. Jesus became poor so we can become rich in Him. When the gospel takes deep root in our hearts, it rids us of any root of favoritism in our hearts.
MEDITATION:
*If you really fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,†you do well. But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.*
(James 2:8â€-‬9 (RSV))

*AND THE LORD SHALL BE KING.*
_Key Bible Text:_
*“And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.â€* (Zechariah‬ â€14:9‬ â€(KJV‬‬))
_Bible Insight:_
Who is Lord over your life? Who is King over your heart? Who is your God? When you surrender to the things of this world, your heart becomes enslaved to the bondage and entanglement of sin. Who has your heart? What has your heart? Who rules on the throne of your heart? What has your heart gripped in its hands?
Do you worship your job? Do you worship your family? Do you worship your legacy? How about your net worth? What do you esteem more than God? What do you value more than God? Do you worship your position? Do you worship your resources? Do you worship your network? How about your influence? Choose to surrender to God. Let God rule your heart. Let His Word have Authority in your life.
MEDITATION:
*And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day there will be one Lord —his name alone will be worshiped.*

*WE ARE SINFUL*
_Key Bible Text:_
*But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.*
(Romans 5:8 (NLT))
_Bible Insight:_
Something is wrong with the world. Something is broken. Something is wrong with all of us. Deep down I believe we all sense this. We can tell something is not right and can’t quite explain why. Whether or not we are believers, I think we can agree this is true.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.†– Romans 3:23
When we come before the Cross of Christ, we become painfully aware that there is nothing we can do to be in a right relationship with God. There is nothing we can do to obtain salvation.
Even if we have a “good†day full of good works including loving others and serving them, the Bible says our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment (Isaiah 64:6).
If the story ended in the fact that we are sinful, that would be the worst news possible. It would honestly be depressing and what hope would we have? Thankfully, the Bible doesn’t teach us that there is no hope. It actually teaches quite the opposite.“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.†– John 3:16
As we come before the cross, we realize that we are forgiven through what Jesus has done for us. The Bible teaches that this forgiveness is available for all people, and that we need to believe in Jesus, choose to repent from our sinful ways, and decide to follow Him.
MEDITATION:
*For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.*
(2 Corinthians 5:21 (NLT))

*WORSHIP GOD FOR WHO HE IS*
Key Bible text:
*I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever.*
(Psalms 145:1 (NLT))
_Bible Insight:_
It’s easy to worship God when we have ample blessings in our lives, and when He says yes to our prayers. We can and we should worship Him for those things! But, first and foremost, we worship Him for who He is.
Did you know that God is omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent? What do these big “omni†words actually mean? Well, omni is a Latin root that simply means “all.†Let’s dive in a little deeper to each of these attributes of God.
*Omnipresent*.
God is “all†present. He is everywhere, all the time, close to everyone and everything. He fills all of heaven and earth. Often as Christ followers, we might pray, “God, please be with me today.†While the petition of God’s presence shows our need for Him, this prayer is actually unnecessary. He is already here and there and elsewhere and all over the place, all the time. What our request should be instead is, “God, please make me aware of your presence.â€
*Omniscient*.
God is “all†knowing. In regard to knowledge, there is no limit with God. He has it all, and He knows it all. Literally. There is not a second that goes by where God is not aware of everything. There is absolutely nothing that He should learn or have to think about. He is never caught off guard or surprised by anything, ever. He just knows. Mind blowing, isn’t it? And isn’t it comforting to know that God knows our needs before we even ask?
*Omnipotent.*
God is “all†powerful. All power belongs to God. He possesses it all. He can do anything and everything. He never gets winded, and He never grows weary. His strength is never zapped, and He never has to take a nap. We may see impossible things in front of us, but with God, all things are possible.
It truly is phenomenal to even comprehend just a portion of who He is. That is where our worshiping Him for who He is should come easy. *When we don’t understand something, just worship*
MEDITATION:
*Of the three “omni†words mentioned above, which one fascinates you the most? Spend some time thinking about that facet of who God is, and worship and thank Him for who He is.*
