Yet another licensed game has been released by Outright Games, which dropped Spirit: Lucky’s Big Adventure not even a week ago. For as much as I am already aware I shouldn’t expect much for a title of this “caliberâ€, I’m always glad to tackle these kinds of games. Licensed tie-ins are almost never as good as your average AAA, but they’re my Achilles’ heel. They remind me of a simpler time in gaming and feature a weird kind of charm that cannot be matched by any other type of game. I’m always glad when a licensed game ends up being better than just “mediocre†or “recommend only for fansâ€. This was the case with DC Super Hero Girls, and thankfully, it’s also the case with The Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom.
Considering the game has multiple TV seasons to pull from, I was surprised at how underbaked the story ended up being. If the plot here had been transposed to the Netflix adaptation, I would generously describe it as a filler arc. We learn almost nothing about Malondre, and nothing changes the status quo of the core cast. I know expecting seismic changes to the plot of the series to come from a video game adaptation is fool-hardy, but the stakes could have been raised at least a little bit here. What we got, though, is a bland adventure that might even bore fans of the series.
The enemies are pretty cool, with the general lot coming in the form of zombies and a selection of little monsters. Even within the zombie types, there are various kinds of threats to worry about; ranging from the slow and laborious to the fast and heavy hitting, with spitters lurking too. The fact that new baddies are added regularly as progress is made is great, especially when the slimy ones show up because they’re harmful even in defeat as the acidic green goo lingers for a moment.
It’s safe to say that The Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom‘s gameplay pretty much saved the game from being a flop. Visually, the game isn’t exactly bad per se, following the show’s art style pretty closely, but it’s mostly comprised of simple 3D assets that could have easily been rendered on much weaker consoles. The problem lies in its sound department, which is comprised of half a dozen horrendously compressed songs which sound worse than fifth gen MIDI. Then there’s voice acting, which isn’t bad, but is so frequent and devoid of charm, you can’t help but feel like letting the zombies eat everyone in your squad just so you can enjoy a few minutes of silence for the sake of your ears and sanity.
The Staff of Doom lacks the visual pizazz of the animated series it's based off of, but it's not all bad visually. The character models for the core four look pretty good, as do the other major monsters you come across. And I also appreciate how much color there is across the entire game. Zombie apocalypses are typically depicted in nothing but the most brown-like of colors, so the bright palette used here was appreciated. The lower budget of the game can be seen in the repetition of certain assets however. The town of Wakefield has little variety to it. The only significant changes come when you venture to certain designated locations, such as the arcade or pier. The reuse of specific bits of dialogue also grates on the nerves. It's nice that some of the voice cast from the show reprised their roles for the game, but a little more variety in their quips was definitely needed.
Overall though, The Last Kids on Earth and The Staff of Doom does enough to warrant interest from those who enjoy the universe via other mediums. The gameplay is straightforward and the arsenal of moves will be exciting from a child’s point-of-view, while the boss encounters are a real highlight.
